 What is Endocrinology?

Endocrinology is the study of medicine that relates to the endocrine system, which is the system that controls hormones. Hormones are secreted in the body by several glands and control the function of entire organs, affect processes such as growth and development, reproduction, and sexual characteristics. Hormones also influence the way the body uses and stores energy, your heart rate, how your bones and tissues grow, and controls the volume of fluid and the levels of salts and sugar in the blood. The system operated on a series of signals, secretions and feedback to precisely maintain body functions. When things are out of balance, the symptoms can manifest in various ways making them hard-to-spot and proper diagnosis complex. An endocrinologist is your best advocate when dealing with hormonal issues.

When should I see an Endocrinologist?

Most patients are referred to an endocrinologist by their primary care physician, although it is not unheard of for patients to go directly to the specialist. Unlike a family doctor or general practitioner, an endocrinologist studies hormones and hormonal diseases in depth. Some patients have conditions that present themselves and develop in a textbook manner, however for many patients this is not the case, and conventional treatment protocols do not work. These patients try hard, maintain rigorous discipline with treatments, but they achieve no results. In these cases an endocrinologist is necessary to further diagnose and treat the condition.
